My Velcro Cloth Diaper PSA

Don't buy velcro cloth diapers.

I wish someone said it to me two years ago, so I will say it to you.

Adam and I have been pulling diapers out of our collection one by one as they are not strong enough to stay closed well anymore. We only have two velcro diapers left in our stash! Which means we have about half the diapers we started with. Which means we have to do laundry more often. That is bad news for the woman who has always owned enough underwear to get her by so she only had to do laundry every two weeks. (Unless you spill something on them, you can wear jeans an unlimited number of days, right?)

Velcro seems like an easy option when you have a newborn, but when you have a toddler, you need something strong and predictable. Snaps are the way to go!

I am considering buying some new snap ones now, but who knows how much longer we have until potty training happens. I am not sure it would be worth it. Especially since I don't know what the future holds in regards to growing our family. (Oh boy, that is for another post!)

So, when you are registering or buying diapers for your little one, get lots of snaps!

  1. I wholeheartedly agree. AND my toddler likes to undo Velcro. *sigh*

  2. You can have your Velcro diapers converted to snaps! You can find people on etsy to doing, or people can recommend people non cloth diaper forums.

    1. I was actually wondering that but hadn't looked yet. Thanks for the tip! It would definitely be worth doing if we are ever going to have a second child in cloth diapers.

  3. Hi, Lisa,
We are just starting the foster-to-adopt process. I know that's different than what you've been through but I really appreciated reading about your experiences with adoption. Thank you so much for putting your story out there.

  4. I didn't like velcro right off the bat because it got all hung up in the wash. But we did have a few for a while and it really doesn't hold up. btw, cot.ton bab.ies dot com is having a seconds sale. You might still be able to snag some deals!

    1. I did buy 4 from that sale a few days ago! Thank you! :) It worked out well because they are selling them without inserts and I can just use the inserts from the velcro ones I am not using.

  5. I'm a big fan of the snaps vs velcro--mostly after I caught my nipple on the velcro while breastfeeding in the early weeks. A scrape of velcro on newly sore breasts was the worst. Our velcro still works but not as well after two kids.

  6. Love the snaps! my hubby not so much, he loves velcro b/c it's easy for him to put on the diaper that way.. but I have also heard of people converting the velcro to snaps, from what I have seen not to expensive to do.
