Adam and I completed Jayden's nursery very early on in our adoption wait. I wrote a few times about how it was depressing to have to dust your baby furniture.
Well, even with having Jayden home, we are still gathering dust in his nursery. He has never been in there.
I have always said I would have him in his own room by 4 months.
That gives me 8 days. Eek.
I am so torn.
On one hand, I think we would all sleep better. Jayden goes to sleep before we do and he always ends up waking up not too long after he goes into his bed because he hears us. We have to keep the lights all off, whisper, and tip toe around the room everynight. Also, I am a light sleeper and I hear every move he makes at night.
So, it seems like it would be a good idea to make the move into his own room....but, my big concern with moving him is that it is so far away. Our bedroom is on the first floor and his nursery is on the second floor. I don't like the thought of him all the way up there, even with using the baby monitor. Plus, sometimes he wakes up and just needs his pacifier put back in and it would not be fun to run all the way upstairs everytime he needs his pacifier.
Last week my sister, Mom, and I went to BabiesRus and got a hamper and some crib sheets. I thought it would get me motivated to make the transition.
Either way, we need to do it before he is 15 pounds because that is the weight limit for the bed he is in now. He is currently about 12 pounds.
I really don't know what to do. I guess we could give it a try and see how it goes....

Big decision. I definitely think it's worth a try, but only you can know for sure. Maybe a video monitor would help to ease your fears a little?
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
We've had Nathan in his crib since we brought him home. I think that we all sleep much better that way. But, I do understand how frustrating it is to get up in the middle of the night to re-swaddle him or give him his pacifier. Why not try a slow transition? You could start him in his crib at night and move him into your room when he wakes up. Then you can transition to not moving him at all.
ReplyDeleteNow I am imagining myself hiding under the covers and watching the video monitor all night, hehe.
ReplyDeleteWe experienced the same dilemia with our daughter...our rooms were far apart and it worried us. She stayed in her bassinet (RIGHT beside my bed) until she was about 5 months. Then we chickened out on moving her into her own room at that time, SOOO we moved her crib into our bedroom lol. She's 2 1/2 and she JUST transitioned to her own room. And *knock on wood* it has been a very easy transition! Her sleeping in our room worked out great for us and I wouldn't have changed it. I think it just depends on what you feel most comfortable with and the floor plan of your house has A LOT more to do with it than I would have ever thought.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck! And I must say OMG Jayden is one of the cutest lil kiddos I've ever seen!!
I had a hard time with that move too... and it was just across the hallway! But all the little "baby noises" were keeping me up when I really needed to sleep. So we started by putting the pack-n-play in the hallway outside the door to our room for a while. Once I was used to that, getting her into the nursey was easy:-)
ReplyDeleteIt's really such a personal decision but I will say that in the scheme of things it will probably be a bigger decision for you than it will be for him (that has been my experience with many things that I wrangled with during infancy through toddlerdom).
ReplyDeleteNothing is an absolute, so try what feels right and see how you do. You an always go back or modify. And, eventually, he'll be able to find the pacifier himself (or may outgrow it in favor of his thumb or nothing at all) and the distance won't be as much of an issue.
Also, I'm not sure where he is napping, but naps are a good way to transition...

We moved our daughter into her (very nearby) bedroom at five weeks. We all slept so much better after that. Do you have one of those video monitors? That might ease your mind a bit, if nothing else.
ReplyDeleteGood luck Lisa. I am sure it is a hard decision to make.
ReplyDeleteI think giving it a try is a great idea. Remember, nothing is permanent. If it works, great! If not you'll find something that does.
ReplyDelete(Personally, my first guy stayed in our room for 4 months but my second was outta there by 6 weeks, we all slept so much better after we made the change- both times.)
It does sound like he is ready. That's how it was when we moved E. We were distrubing him. Also, we got a video monitor so we could see if he was just making a noise, needed his paci, or something else. I love love love my video monitor. We all sleep so much better.
ReplyDeleteWe've gone back and forth a few times. We moved our daughter into her room about 3.5 months. Then she came back in with us about 6 months because she was having some awful sleep issues. And around 9 months she went back into her room. Each time it made me sad, but each time it was better for all of us. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteHe's four months. Don't rush it. You'll miss him when he's gone. Maybe just move the bassinet into the hall?
ReplyDeleteTry it and see how it goes. Theo was in another room from us almost immediately but we always go in if we hear a peep. I found I just could not sleep with him in the room. He and my husband snore like chainsaws! Now, of course, we have a cot in his room and one of us spends half the night in there anyway! You can't win!
ReplyDeleteMaybe just try it for naps and ease him into it that way? Have you tried a Wubbanub? If Jayden uses Soothie pacificers, he might really like it! My baby can put that pacifier back in her mouth by herself, so that might be a good option for the crib!
ReplyDeleteThe WHO suggest moving them after 6 months as this reduces the risk of cot death, apparently. x
ReplyDeleteYou have to do what provides the most sleep for you. I slept with my oldest in our bed until 9 months and then it was a slow transition after that. My second was out after a week because she was too noisy. And now the 3rd was somewhere in the middle. The middle of the night binky plug-ins are no fun. I can attest for that. Good luck with your decision. Try different things!
ReplyDeleteI say enjoy this time with him, it will be gone before you know it. No need to rush.
ReplyDeleteDylan slept in his own room at 4 months old, but it was not so far away from us. He also didn't take a paci. Some of my kids were in our room a year, and others 3. Yeah. I won't go there. LOL
Whatever you decide, just feel good about it and don't feel bad if you go back and forth. There are no right answers.
We moved my daughter at about 4 months because I was going back to work, and we all needed to start getting more sleep. Luckily her bedroom is across the hall and I kept the door open after she fell asleep so I could hear her. I slept so much better when she wasn't right next to us, and so did she. It was a good move. A good baby monitor will make you feel better too. We didn't have a video one, but I could hear every move with the audio one. I would still tip-toe in if she ever sounded funny and just watch her for a while. Good luck, Jayden is beautiful!
